Chicago At Work

Photography by Clayton Hauck

"Take a peek at six fascinating jobs. From the heights of the city to the depths of the wild-reef tank."  Clayton and I worked hard over a two week deadline to shoot at least nine Chicagoans, with interesting jobs, doing what they do best.  Here are the six that made the cut.

The Last Hike of David Gimelfarb

Photography by Daniel Shea

During the summer of 2013 I sent the talented documentary photographer Daniel Shea to Costa Rica to retrace the missing Chicago hiker David Gimelfarb’s last known steps. The following 29 images capture a lush region known for its natural beauty and abundant greenery. But there hidden dangers lend an aura of mystery to this strange tale.

In the Shadow of the Gun

Photography by Jon Lowenstein

Years before Jon Lowenstein moved to South Shore in 2005, the award-winning photojournalist started what turned out to be a continuous project of documenting the neighborhood and those around it. Using large-format Polaroid film exclusively, he has captured thousands of images of everyday life—graduations, boxing matches, the annual Bud Billiken Parade—and scenes of tragedy stemming from gun violence in his adopted community.  I worked directly with Jon to edit this photo essay that shows Chicago communities torn apart by violence.

Chicago’s Once-Grand Movie Palaces

Photography by Eric Holubow

Photographer Eric Holubow offers a rare glimpse inside five of Chicago’s most grand movie palaces. Eric and I worked together to create this award-winning photo essay (SPD Merit Award '14) with an introduction by the late and great Roger Ebert.

Life Through a Leica

Photography by Art Shay

For nearly 70 years, Art Shay kept two things by his side: The love of his life, Florence, and a camera.   Art was kind enough to share these beautiful photos with Chicago magazine so we sat together and edited this photo essay that told their amazing love story.

Shooting From the Hip

Photography by Scott Strazzante

This photo essay by the award-winning Chicago Tribune staff photographer shows the informal street-shooting style Strazzante has developed over the past two years. All taken with his iPhone.

Water for the People

Photography by Paul D'Amato

Paul D'Amato's 25-year project shows working class people getting soaked in the summer heat of Chicago, Mexico, and Maine. I came across Paul's work and had to feature him and this beautiful photo essay on the "Big Picture" page which celebrates local photography and photographers.

This Way Out

Photography by Daniel Shea

The Final Exit Network president, Jerry Dincin, has helped 14 gravely ill people end their lives. Now, at 81, the Highland Park resident faces a terminal illness himself.  I hired Daniel Shea to take his last portrait.
